Getting started

MMO Run comes as a launcher that runs worlds on your computer, a client you play with, and a standalone server for when you want a world running on a VPS around the clock. This page gets you from download to standing in your own world.

1. Download

Get the launcher and the client for Windows, macOS or Linux from mmo.run. Players only need the client; the person hosting the world needs the launcher too.

Running a world on a machine with no screen, like a VPS? Download the server instead and follow Running a dedicated server.

2. Create a world

In the launcher press Create world:

  • Name: what players see when they connect.
  • Preset: Classic MMO turns on everything for a classic game: combat, classes, abilities, mobs, quests, NPCs, the starter zones and the editor.
  • Port: 27015 is fine.

Press Start. The Console tab shows the world starting; when it reports ready, the world is live.

3. Join it

Open the client and connect to 127.0.0.1:27015. Make an account. The first account on a world becomes its owner, so make yours before anyone else joins. Pick a class, name your character and you are in the meadow. Playing covers the controls.

4. Invite friends

Open the launcher's Invite tab and press New invite. Share the eight-letter code; friends type it into the client's connect box. If your router is in the way, they connect through the MMO Run relay automatically. See Invites.

5. Make it yours

  • Press F2 in game to open the editor: paint the map, add NPCs and quests.
  • Turn features on and off in the launcher's Extensions tab.
  • Add world events and quest logic with Run Script.
  • Everything about your world lives in one folder. Copy it to back up or move a world; Hosting a world has the details.

MMO Run: host your own pixel-art MMO.
